![]() Bunsen Burner Set-Up |
A bunsen burner is a much more complicated and dangerous apparatus to use. Precautions must be taken, and you must keep your full attention.
First, before you do anything, you need to check the gas inlet on your Bunsen Burner for any scathes, cuts or any holes. If the inlet is not checked, and, for example, there happenes to be a hole in the tube, once the inlet is plugged in and the gas is turned on, gas will leak out of the holes, and when you strike your match, which of course you will do at the same time as the gas (see below), wel, let's just say, "it'll go out with a bang".
When you first get started using the bunsen burner, make sure the air holes (to the right) are closed by the collar. This means that when you get your bunsen burner up and running, you will have the yellow luminous flame, hot, but not as hot as a blue non-luminous flame.
To get to the stage of the picture on the right, after you have checked the gas inlet and made sure the collar is covering the air holes, you will need;
When setting the scene up, you need to make sure that everything is revovling around the bunsen burner being in the middle. You should have the bunsen burner on top of the silicon mat. You need to make sure that the tripod is centred over the burner, so that your substance will heat properly. Then all you will need is your beaker or whatever apparatus you are using and whatever substance you are aiming to heat. These should be placed on the top, where the gauze mat should be layed flat on the top of the tripod. When striking the match, you need to be very careful and precise. You need to make sure that you do not turn on the gas tap first, otherwise, as you put the match over the top of the burner, you could cause an explosion. When you strike you match, then hold it over the top of the burner. Make sure to turn on the gas tap and place the match over the top of the burner at the same time. Then, if neccesary, you can now open the collar to reveal the non-luminous flame, a much, much hotter flame than the standard luminous flame. You are now up and running! :) |
